Some of the most intense colours occur in the cooler months, when the trees are bare of leaf. A small pool left behind after heavy rain has briefly lifted the river collects and intensifies blue sky in the shade of the bank; overnight temperatures have left its surface not quite frozen. As the sun rises, the alder’s branches paint dark marks: water as canvas.
